New Album. U2. Songs of Innocence.

10 Sep

So U2 surprised everybody with a sudden release of their newest offering Songs of Innocence exclusively on iTunes free for all the world to download. My hopes from January of this year for a completely un-hyped release came true giving fans a chance to judge the album on the music and nothing else. The release without any sort of build up is perfect no reviews to tell you what to think in advance, no time to re-new your hate of Bono (if your that way inclined), just the music to instantly hear and evaluate for yourself.

There’s no denying how huge it is when U2 release an album, this morning I walked the aisles of the dart and looked at so many people’s ipod screen displaying the new U2 digital album cover as they listened. A simple hand written vinyl record sleeve emphasising that that this is about the music and nothing more.

U2 Songs of Innocence

Today will be a day spent listening to the album and from my first cursory auditory glance its sounding good getting back to writing songs about real things from life, its not caught up in trying to sound like a “U2” album a lot less self indulgent than the usual ageing rock-star releases.

It’s looking like the first of a series of albums set to be released with this being mainly about the band and its members early existence in the 70’s in Dublin.

I won’t go into any more detail as I’m sure it will be reviewed to death and plenty reviews will struggle to be about the music and not the band. So have a listen for yourself and decide for yourself, because they have already made the money from itunes and the rest is just a gift for us to hear.

New Single. Color//Sound. To The Countryside

18 Jun

Colour Sound

Dublin based Oisin Furlong, Brendan McGlynn, Steven McCann and Ben Roe formed Color//Sound in 2012 at BIMM Dublin.

I’ve caught them live once or twice and every time they deliver a confident and self assured performance. A diverse sound delivered through all four members of the band who seem equally comfortable in front of a microphone and on their particular instrument leads to a very powerful performance. Their new single ‘To the countryside’ shows some of the ease they possess at sliding between floating soft melodies and upbeat guitar laden indie rock. Plenty of catchy hooks and harmonies as the lead vocals trade off between different members of the band it creates a huge sound from the four piece.

With influences ranging from Elliott Smith and Jeff Buckley to Explosions In The Sky and Radiohead, the band draws inspiration from all genres and combines them to create their own explosive sound. After a year of extensive gigging alongside the countries cream of the crop, including Cathy Davey, Villagers, Little Matador, Neil Hannon & Turn. Color//Sound are set to release their new single ‘To the Countryside’ soon maybe even in a couple of days as their facebook page is counting down to something.

‘To The Countryside’ is due for release on Monday 23rd of June.

Mix 14, Showcase Live at The Odessa.

15 May

Last night saw the live showcase of this years Hotpress MIX14 graduates. A show organised and performed at by the students of this years course.

Aoife Cullinane

Kicking off a little after 8pm was the first act of the night Aoife Cullinane. A singer songwriter hailing from Cork at the beginning of her career in music started us off in fine fashion delivering her set in chronological order of when the songs were written, giving a perfect flow to her honest an emotional lyrics. Expressing herself through her music is her main focus, helping to identify herself with the audience in no time. Delivered in some beautifully soft vocals and subtle acoustic guitar, it’s a great start to the night.

BeRn

Next up is the vigorous BeRn who delivers her own brand of ‘Frock’ (Folk Rock). BeRn steps up to the stage with bags of confidence backed up by plenty of experience delivering her brand of campfire punk rock. BeRn has shared stages with many greats of the music world from Shane McGowan to Patti Smith and John Spillane. Her style is that of a poet delivering verse about everything from the hardships of life and love to political motivations and human rights. All backed up by high energy guitar to remind you of Christy Moore at his most energetic. Confidence sells her set to the crowd so easily getting people to join in and harmonise with her throughout.

Scoops

Scoops aka Stephen Cooper is a frenetic ball of energy. The solo singer songwriter well-known around the Dublin pub scene steps up to the mike an instantly begins to banter with the crowd. Displaying an ease on stage from cutting his teeth playing in the loud and lively pubs round the city well used to contending with a large crowd. His first two songs are summer songs delivered with all the ease and happiness you’d expect from such a starting point. A prolific songwriter with a large catalogue to draw from he delivers simple happy pop songs about days in the sun and nights on the town, even his songs on darker subjects like the passing of a friend in tragic circumstances have a hopeful air that infects the crowd. Finishing off his set with a very unique piece of music he blasts out a techno song with nothing but an effects pedal and an acoustic guitar.
Check out his acoustic Techno here.

Raphaels

Raphaels a Dublin based rock/indie/pop band consisting of four unique sounds brought together to create something fresh fronted by lead singer Ray Mullan the boys are the last act of the night, the crowd is full of energy at this point being readily warmed up by the first three acts. The perfect moment for the noise level to be lifted by a full band. Raphaels bounce from hints of Funk (akin to Red Hot Chili Peppers) to shoe gaze swagger of an Oasis sort before throwing in hints of alt folk with the acoustic guitar changing the sound again. Lifting the energy in the room with a simple assurance of their craft the lads deliver a fantastic close to the night.

Daniel James. New Single. The Bridge.

13 Mar

Daniel_James The Bridge

I’m loving this new single from Daniel James. The bridge is an upbeat instantly catchy alt pop track with electronic beats and a seriously catchy hook.

The Bridge which will be released April 21st through Grey Sky Records. The track takes its source from a 1984 documentary about street kids in Seattle dealing with sex and drugs; ‘The Bridge’ is the place they escape to for moments of connecting with their true innocence.
Daniel who hails from Northern Ireland but now resides in London, recently toured with Sam Smith and will be performing dates with Saint Raymond this month along with festival appearances in May.

And you can even get a free download track called ‘Gallaher Blues‘.

There is also another track called ‘A lonely man’ only a demo, not that you can tell its got hit written all over it especially with the chorus.
