Rhob Cunningham (Support for Hey Rosetta, Dublin 12/04/12) @rhobc

13 Apr

I was set for a great gig to see Hey Rosetta last night I wasnt thinking to much who would be supporting. So when my friend bumped into Rhob Cunningham in the venue and found out it was him I was very excited having never seen him live and only getting to hear a few youtube videos.

Rhob Cunningham is a singer songwriter who’s been paying his dues for the last few years touring all over the place supporting Cathy Davey, Lisa Hannigan and Villagers under the guise of his band Our Little Secrets. Our Little Secrets has gone to the scrapbook leaving Rhob to work on a solo project leading to an album this year hopefully. If you have heard and liked Fionn Regan, Lisa Hannigan, James Vincent McMorrow or many other Irish singer songwriters you will love Rhob Cunningham.
His voice is as my friend put it “lovely” ranging from the strained country twinge to the soft and low of whispered lyrics full of story and emotion. He has moments where his song writing hint to Simon and Garfunkel, Laura Marling and The Frames which is good company to keep. He played some of his new songs which I believe will be part of his first solo album this year, it looks set to be a gem as the loss of a band has left a great voice and honesty in his song writing that will connect to everybody that hears it.

Its tough to support a band who are playing their first Irish Show and have a small dedicated following in this country (a massive following back home in Canada & New Foundland) playing to a sold out Sugar Club. You have the mix of music fans who lsiten to everything and people who just want to see the main act, so grabbing attention can be tough. Rhob has a laid back stage presence with plenty of crowd interaction not afraid to talk about a song or say hello to an audience member, its great to see someone who doesnt get distracted by the usual crowd of talkers at the back of the room (which sadly seems to be a fact of life in dublin) instead he plays to the majority of the crowd who listen to a singer that came as a huge bonus to what would already be a great gig.
So when next year rolls around and Rhobs album has been released to the reaction he surely deserves the people who watched and listened can remember they saw him on a thursday night support slot in the Sugar Club.

Check out his bandcamp to listen to all his stuff including his new releases as they’re made available.
